Students Win Provincial Video Competition

School buses are the safest way to travel. Even though this is true, accidents can and do happen. This was the message behind the award winning video produced by the combined drama and media classes at Sacred Heart School.

In a provincial competition sponsored by the Student Transportation Association of Alberta, the Sacred Heart submission called “The Perfect Storm” was awarded first place.

In the three minute video, the anatomy of an accident or near miss is looked at in a series of flashback and witness statements.

“It was important that we not lay blame on any individual as the cause of an accident,” said drama teacher Ken Mastel. “We didn’t want to say that it’s always the motorist fault, or the students, or the bus drivers. But if everyone is momentarily distracted, an accident can happen just the same, hence the title The Perfect Storm.”

Statistics show that the most dangerous time on a bus trip is as students are getting on or off, something emphasized in the video.

For their efforts, a $1000 prize has been awarded to the school, and they have been invited to the STAA provincial conference for recognition. The video will be used by the STAA in upcoming school bus safety presentations and on the school website.
